Router/Switch

The routers and/or switches connect the point of sale terminals and other network devices together on the same network. Switches create a functional network while routers connect these networks.

Router

A router can perform the same functions as a switch, as well as more advanced networking tasks. Routers have the ability to filter network traffic at gateways based on the networked devices' IP addresses. Routers can also encrypt and decrypt incoming and outgoing network traffic.

Switch

A switch uses its internal processor to store attached devices' Media Access Control (MAC) addresses and port number. This allows the switch to transmit packets of information between devices and define the most efficient use of the available bandwidth.
